The Chartres Khan "big Tent" was designed by Forster's architectural design firm (Foster Partners), based in London, Nigel-Dancy, the company's senior partner, said the tilted needle-shaped center was designed to evoke memories of yurts: "yurts as a traditional form of nomadic people in the history of the Kazakh nation has aroused strong resonance."

' Chartres Khan ' can be roughly translated into "Khan or the king's tent." "In 1997, President Nursultan Nazarbayev relocated the Kazakh capital from Alma-ata to Astana, a relatively cold and remote north-central city," said Acmora. More than 10 years on, the "Chartres Khan" big Tent is now the city's new landmark architecture.
